Area commissioner balks at buying $14 million hotel for Homeless Trust needs

Whether Miami-Dade County will spend $14 million to buy a La Quinta Inn in Cutler Bay for a 109-unit senior housing complex remains up in the air as the county commission spent most of Tuesday taking turns on the soapbox offering points of view.

Most commissioners were ready to approve a report from Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, but Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins, in whose district the motel sits, objected, saying $14 million is way too expensive and that other sites in the $4 million to $6 million range weren’t explored.
