Seheli Sabrin: Bangladesh consul general hunts trade and investment ties
As Consul General of Bangladesh in Miami, Seheli Sabrin brings nearly two decades of diplomatic experience to her current role overseeing consular and community affairs across eight US states. Appointed in September 2024, she is the second person to hold this post since the Miami mission was established in 2021, and she has quickly set a tone of outreach, accessibility and ambition.
Her primary responsibility is the welfare of Bangladeshi expatriates and Bangladeshi Americans in the region, ensuring efficient consular services like passports, visas and power of attorney processing, while also stepping in to support community members facing challenges. With approximately 50,000 Bangladeshi Americans in Florida and more than 100,000 in the Southeastern US under her jurisdiction registered with the consulate, her mission includes providing direct service and fostering relationships with diaspora communities.
Consul General Sabrin sees her tenure as a chance to deepen ties between Bangladesh and the US through collaboration in areas like trade and investment, education, healthcare, energy and cultural exchange. Her public diplomacy background informs her vision for the consulate as a proactive platform and one that not only supports nationals abroad but also strengthens Bangladesh’s presence and partnerships in the region.
Prior to her Miami posting, she held key leadership roles at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka, including Director General of Public Diplomacy and Director General of Consular & Welfare, and made history as the ministry’s first-ever spokesperson. She also served as Director for the Americas, South Asia and West Asia, where she focused on enhancing bilateral and consular relations.
Her overseas experience includes diplomatic assignments in Australia and Indonesia, where she worked on multilateral issues and regional cooperation, including human trafficking in coordination with the UN. Now in Miami, Consul General Sabrin brings that global experience to a dynamic region, aiming to serve the Bangladeshi diaspora while building new bridges of cooperation between Bangladesh and the Southeastern US.
