Resul Sahinol: Seeks to build trade, investment, cultural ties with Türkiye

Resul Sahinol arrived in Miami in October 2023 after working in Washington as the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Turkish embassy. After serving ten months as the Chargé d’Affaires in Miami, Mr. Sahinol was officially appointed the Consul General for the Republic of Türkiye in Miami at the beginning of August.

Established in 2014, the Turkish consulate in Miami caters to a community of around 27,000 registered members within its jurisdiction, including Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Puerto Rico. An estimated 55,000 to 60,000 Turkish Americans live in the region.

As a pillar of support, the consulate provides a platform for the Turkish community, promoting trade and investment and enhancing cultural exchanges between Türkiye and the US in its region of responsibility. It assists Turkish Americans, ensuring their needs are met.

Economic investment and trade between the two nations are primarily concentrated in industries such as textiles, steel and construction materials, furniture, cosmetics, the health sector and tourism. In recent years, a growing number of Turkish tech companies and logistics firms have established operations in Miami and the surrounding region, creating a new wave of economic opportunities.

Another influential export of Türkiye to the US and Latin America is its soap operas, which have played an unexpected but effective means of introducing Turkish culture to a global audience, Mr. Sahinol says, aligning with the consulate’s goals of strengthening cultural ties around the world.

Born outside of Ankara, Türkiye, Mr. Sahinol has a diverse background in foreign service, with experience in both military and diplomatic roles, as well as postings in various countries before taking on his current position in Miami.

As consul general, Mr. Sahinol is dedicated to promoting the welfare of the Turkish community on the local level. His and the consulate’s goal is to improve the quality of life for Turkish Americans, increase the capacity for trade and investment, and foster a strong and enduring relationship between Türkiye and the US.

Mr. Sahinol spoke with Miami Today reporter Genevieve Bowen.

This week’s profile will appear in next year’s Book of Leaders.
