Raphaël Trapp: Consul general says more French companies want Miami operations

Raphaël Trapp is the consul general of France in Miami, working to forge bridges between the booming economic sectors of France and Florida and parts of the Caribbean. His appointment began in September 2022.

He also has a lengthy career at the United Nations, both in Geneva and Vienna, working in human rights violations, the promotion of freedom of expression, the fight against arbitrary detention and cybercrime, and the abolition of the death penalty, as well as helping to control nuclear weapon capacities in Iran.

In 2009, Mr. Trapp was appointed legal advisor to the permanent representation of France to the UN in Geneva, and in 2012 he became the head of its human rights division, helping create the Commission of Inquiry into Human Rights Violation in Syria.

In Paris, he worked for the Secretary General at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the Quai d’Orsay overseeing administrative operations, modernization efforts and consular affairs.

Born in La Rochelle, he said, “I developed a particular link with the Atlantic Ocean. That’s why I’m very glad to be in Miami, on the other side of the Atlantic. It’s a different perspective, and having a different perspective in life is really important.”

Celebrating differences, he said, is an important moto that individuals, and especially diplomats, should have in their lives. His goal at the consulate is to welcome French citizens and businesses to Miami, and to attract their American counterparts to visit and invest in France.

Mr. Trapp spoke with Miami Today reporter Monica Correa.
