Laura Kaplan: New Miamians focus of her effort at BNY Mellon Wealth

“I would say the one thing I love about wealth management is that you never know what one day would look like,” said Laura Kaplan, president of BNY Mellon Wealth Management in Miami. One day she could be working with the Perez Art Museum Miami and on another with a family, or with a team, with attorneys and accountants.

“It’s really what the community and what the local teams and clients need me to do,” she said.

Ms. Kaplan began her career as a global banker in Asia, working for General Motors Treasury and helping to build the infrastructure for the automotive industry in Thailand and China.

Prior to joining the company, she worked at Bank of America Private Bank as managing director and senior private client advisor, and also at Deutsche Bank Private Bank as managing director, as market manager for Citi Private Bank Law Firm Group, and as vice president of global relationships at Citigroup Latin America.

When the pandemic hit, she had a lot of time to reassess her life’s purpose. She identified what was and wasn’t working in her life and in the industry, “and I decided I really wanted to go back to running a business and working with teams,” Ms. Kaplan said.

She recalls she wanted to have a larger impact on the community. “I was successful doing it on my own, but I wanted the opportunity to go back and help others be successful in our space as well.”

Ms. Kaplan, amid the pandemic, decided to look at the firms in the market that shared her philosophy on comprehensive wealth management and that looked at families holistically, and found BNY Mellon Wealth Management. “I joined in December of 2020, and it’s been a fantastic decision,” Ms. Kaplan said. “I really couldn’t be more excited about our future.”

Laura Kaplan talked with Miami Today Reporter Gabriela Henriquez Stoikow.
