Charles Chou: Leading five Taiwan economic cooperation efforts in state
In January 2023, Charles Chi-Yu Chou was appointed Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Miami, representing Taiwan’s interests in Florida, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and several Caribbean territories. Located in Coral Gables, the office functions as a de facto consulate, facilitating Taiwan’s economic, cultural and diplomatic ties within the region.
Mr. Chou’s responsibilities include strengthening ties with local businesses, advancing cultural exchanges and advocating for Taiwan’s influence on the world stage despite the complexities of international recognition.
Mr. Chou brings with him over two decades of experience in Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). Prior to this role, he served as Deputy Director General of the Department of East Asian and Pacific Affairs and Chairperson of the Congressional Liaison Office, where he contributed to shaping Taiwan’s foreign policy and fostering connections with global stakeholders.
His career also spans roles in the Department of West Asian and African Affairs as well as postings in Malaysia and New York, where he helped guide Taiwan’s relations.
A passionate supporter of Taiwan’s global engagement, Mr. Chou is focused on enhancing its diplomatic presence and expanding economic opportunities for Taiwanese enterprises.
His academic background includes advanced studies at Harvard University, the Australian National University and Tamkang University, reflecting his commitment to cultural understanding and international collaboration.
Looking forward, Mr. Chou seeks to further bolster Taiwan’s position in the Americas and drive continued dialogue and partnerships between Taiwan and the US.
