Subway car takes its final trip to Wynwood Walls
A reclaimed subway car has made it in time to be part of Wynwood Walls’ Miami Art Week.
Themed “Power of Purpose,” this year’s Miami Art Week will debut the historic 48-foot immersive subway art piece that will call the Wynwood Walls at 2516 NW Second Ave. its forever home. The subway just completed a 1,000-mile journey from West Virginia and will now be a fascinating installation for Miami locals and visitors to enjoy.
Originally built between 1976 and 1978, this Boeing-Vertol 2400 is one of only 200 built in its series. While most cars were scrapped after being in service for around 10 years, this one was used in anti-terrorism training exercises for the Center for National Response.
When Jessica Goldman Srebnick, curator of Wynwood Walls, discovered that many of these cars had been purchased and stored in the mountains of West Virginia, she set out on a mission to acquire one of these historic transport cars.
With the aim to create interactive artwork for visitors, the subway car is set to feature one-of-a-kind murals on the exterior and curated artworks on the interior, where advertising posters were once housed. This work is meant to delight, inspire, and spark curiosity for its future “passengers” in its new home at Wynwood Walls, she said.
Wynwood Walls is set to unveil the reclaimed subway car on Saturday (11/25) ahead of Miami Art Week.

Just to let you know, the CTA 2400 series cars were in revenue service for 38 years, not 10.
