Subway car to become permanent Wynwood art installation
Wynwood Walls has a new artists lineup and theme for this year’s Miami Art Week.
Starting Nov. 24, Wynwood Walls’ “The Power of Purpose” is set to reveal a reclaimed subway car as a permanent installation at the museum. The art piece finds its new home after completing a 1,000-mile journey from West Virginia to Wynwood, just in time for its Miami Art Week debut.
“This interactive work is meant to further deepen the understanding of where the journey of the street art movement and graffiti culture began as it will now sit in its new home, not on train tracks, but in an oasis of arts,” said Jessica Goldman Srebnick, Wynwood Walls’ lead curator and Goldman Global Arts CEO.
Among the lineup of featured artists for 2023 are The London Police (United Kingdom); Greg Mike (Atlanta); Defer (Los Angeles); Shok1 (United Kingdom); Lauren Ys (Los Angeles); Leon Keer (Netherlands); Sandra Chevrier (Canada); and Mojo (Miami).
Artist events will also take place throughout the week, including sculpture unveilings by Dan Lam and Ron English, a solo exhibition inside the GGA Annex Gallery by international artist Kai, and the launch of Street Sessions, which is a 30-minute “Watch & Learn” session with artists as they paint new murals inside the mural walls at 2516 NW Second Ave.
“As the lead curator for more than a decade,” Ms. Goldman Srebnick said. “I scour the world – year after year – to find the most talented, creative, and passionate artists from all corners of the globe to bring their magic to Wynwood for millions to enjoy.”
In the main Goldman Global Arts Gallery, guests will find canvas work of the over 100 artists that have graced the Wynwood Walls over the years and exclusive artist product collections in the Wynwood Walls Shop.
“Our goal is that a visit to the Wynwood Walls brings discovery, curiosity, inspiration and hope,” Ms. Goldman Srebnick added. “In its 13 years, the Wynwood Walls has helped ignite one of the largest art movements in history, launched careers and changed the paradigm of how people interact with art. We have been deeply committed to being a celebratory platform for artists of all ages, nationalities and genders.”
