Planned Homestead airport grounded, site for “national security”

Long-crafted plans for a general aviation airport at Homestead Air Reserve Base came crashing down last week when county commissioners grounded them in favor of leasing 32 acres to the federal government for an unstated “national security” purpose.

Commissioners unanimously rescinded their own 2020 resolution to swap property with the US so that fixed-based operation of a county airport could proceed there. Commissioners had expected the airport to be pivotal in establishing a park of commerce nearby.
