HOTELS SPARKLE: Miami-Dade led the nation in hotel occupancy rates, room rates and revenue per available room for the first four months of this year, according to Co-Star data provided by the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau. Miami-Dade as a whole had 82.4% occupancy in the four months and Miami Beach alone had 80.6%, with Miami Beach room rates averaging $401.41 – up 13.5% from a year ago – and Miami-Dade rates at $304.81, up 11.2%. In revenue per available room, Miami Beach hoteliers received $323.36 and Miami-Dade hotels took in $251,10, up 12.3% and 11.9% respectively. Tampa Bay had the largest percentage loss in occupancy, down 4.3% at 77.3% occupancy. The largest decline in room rates was 13.2% in New Orleans to $186.73. New Orleans also had the largest decline in revenue per available room, down 14.4%.
FEWER AIR PASSENGERS: Miami International Airport, which saw a passenger decline last year, has seen that trend continue through the first four months of 2026. Total passengers through April are down 0.7 % to 19,167,753, the airport’s traffic reports show. The decline grew more rapidly in April, with a 2.02% drop from April 2025. So far this year, domestic passengers have declined 0.82% from last year and international passengers have decreased 0.56%. International passengers this year comprise 44.2% of all Miami International traffic. The big decline in April was in domestic passengers, down 3.27% from April 2025, while international travel fell 0.34%.
AIR CARGO SOARING: As Miami International passenger travel declines, cargo tonnage is up in double digits through April over the first four months of 2025. The total increase in tonnage so far this year is 12.22%, with international tonnage alone increasing 12.66% and domestic rising 9.83%. In April alone, tonnage rose 3.98%, with international up 6.05% and domestic declining 6.6%. Last year total cargo tonnage at the airport increased 13.61%, with international up 13.93% and domestic up 11.98%. The vast majority of cargo tonnage – 84.7% this year – is international. The airport reported Tuesday that it is now the busiest cargo airport in the United States and third busiest globally, surpassed by only Hong Kong and Shanghai. That report said the airport’s statewide economic impact is now $212 billion.
