WORLD CUP SHUTTLES: After learning that its drive to charge $50 or $60 for transit trips to World Cup matches and other mega-events was a non-starter due to likely loss of federal funding, Miami-Dade has shifted gears. Country transit operators last week announced four totally free express shuttles on game day to World Cup matches at Hard Rock Stadium, albeit on a first-come, first-served basis. The shuttle hubs will be at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Metrorail station, the Golden Glades multimodal transit station, the Aventura Brightline station and the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Broward County. The free rides are only with those for verified match ticketholders. The announcement says shuttle passengers have to find their own way to the hubs via a combination of Metrorail, Metrobus, Tri-Rail, Brightline, rideshare services and park-and-ride hubs. The county says details about the service and how to get to the Fan Fest celebration “will be released in the coming weeks.” World Cup parking spaces at the stadium will run $250 apiece for some matches.

NEW FIGHTER JETS: Homestead Air Reserve Base could have 24 new F-35A Lighting II fighter jets based there by 2035, according to an announcement last week by the Air Force, which included the base as the candidate to receive the new planes for its 482nd Fighter Wing. The decision isn’t final. The Air Force says final action is pending both its own determination and an environmental impact analysis. U.S. Rep. Carlos Giménez said in his own announcement of the plans for the new jets that he has been working for years to secure a long-term mission for the base and protect its strategic importance to both the local economy and national defense. The Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II is the U.S. Air Force’s premier conventional takeoff and landing fifth-generation stealth fighter, designed for combat, including air superiority and strike missions. It features advanced sensor fusion, network-centric operations, and agility.

MORE POWER TO US: Florida Power & Light’s plans for four new transmission lines in South Florida were approved by the Public Service Commission on Monday. The regulators determined the Andytown-Oasis Transmission Lines Project, estimated at $781 million, is needed to maintain reliability of electric service and meet the growing energy demand in Miami-Dade County. The commission said the project “will help address projected transmission constraints associated with increasing electricity demand in Miami-Dade County and reduce the risk of thermal overloads and low-voltage conditions that could affect reliable electric service.” FPL, according to its website, plans to start design for the project this year.
