CANCER CENTER OPENS: Mount Sinai Medical Center this week opened to patients its new five-story Irma and Norman Braman Comprehensive Cancer Center. The 216,000-square-foot building on Biscayne Bay more than triples the medical center’s cancer care capacity with 39 infusion bays, 56 physician exam rooms, two linear accelerators with room for a third, and an integrated diagnostic suite. The center also has an expanded breast center, the RAD Center for cancer genetics, clinical research space, and supportive care services for patients and families. “We set out to build something that changes what a cancer diagnosis means in this community,” Mr. Braman said.

AVIANCA PLANS GROWTH: Colombia-based Avianca airline this week announced an expansion plan that would increase its Miami-Barranquilla flights from three a week to daily frequency. The airline currently operates more than 400 weekly flights across 14 U.S. destinations. The plan includes a second flight every day between Fort Lauderdale and Bogotá and a year-round daily flight between Orlando and Medellin. The announcement says these flights are the airline’s intention but did not say when the additional service would start.

HEADING TOWARD TAKEOFF: After Spirit Airlines collapsed financially over the weekend, an iconic Miami airline, Pan American World Airways, announced that it is advancing its plans to return to the skies by deploying Geo Spatios, a 2025 startup airline operating system designed to model and optimize complex airline operations in real time. “Pan Am’s flight operations will be coordinated and managed by best-in-class software technology using artificial intelligence to enable faster decision making,” said Pan Am CEO and co-founder Ed Wegel. The announcement does not discuss any details of Pan Am operating intentions or when it expects to go airborne for the first time. The original Pan Am operated from 1927 to 1991 and is described as being “the world’s most prestigious international carrier” in the 1960s.

GAS PRICES SURGE: Florida gas prices surged 40 cents per gallon last week, soaring from $3.94 per gallon on Monday to $4.34 on Sunday, the highest single day’s average in the state since July 2022, AAA said. Since the Iranian conflict began, Florida’s average price has risen $1.46 per gallon, going from $2.88 to $4.34. That adds $22 to the cost for an average-sized tank of gas. Prices in Miami are 17.1 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and $1.36 higher than a year ago, according to GasBuddy. The national average price rose 38.2 cents per gallon in the week to $4.42.
