Lynn Torrent: Takes the helm of growing MSC Cruises North America
When Lynn Torrent was named president of MSC Cruises USA in May, it was an important step in a career that’s influenced modern cruising, one that started far from Miami’s sunny shores.
Born and raised on Long Island, NY, Ms. Torrent first studied accounting at Long Island University and afterwards moved south in search of tropical weather, earning an MBA at Florida Atlantic University. She spent the early part of her career as a CPA and CFO for a small public company before pivoting into the cruise industry, a move she admits was unplanned, but one that proved transformational.
Ms. Torrent entered the industry in 1995 with a luxury line, Renaissance Cruises, where she gained hands-on experience across departments. That foundation propelled her into executive leadership roles at Costa Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line, where she spent 15 years leading everything from strategic marketing to guest services and commercial operations. After a stint at Apple Leisure Group, she joined MSC Cruises in 2022 as chief commercial officer, tasked with helping the European brand grow its North American footprint.
Since then, Ms. Torrent has been at the center of MSC’s expansion in the US, overseeing commercial strategy across sales, marketing, revenue and contact center operations. Her promotion this spring came during a transformative moment for the company: the opening of its $350 million flagship terminal at PortMiami.
Designed by Arquitectonica and built by Fincantieri Infrastructure, the sleek glass structure is now the world’s largest cruise terminal, spanning 490,000 square feet over four levels with the capacity to process 36,000 passengers a day and simultaneously berth three of MSC’s largest, next-generation ships.
The terminal’s scale is matched by its sophistication. It features biometric check-in, advanced security systems and airport-grade baggage handling, all designed to move passengers efficiently and comfortably. Shore power capability allows ships to plug into land-based electricity while docked, a major step toward MSC’s goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
The terminal also houses seven artworks commissioned through the county’s Art in Public Places program, including a 10,000-square-foot LED installation that uses real-time NOAA data on tides, currents and weather patterns.
Since MSC Divina first arrived in Miami in 2013, the brand’s presence has steadily grown, with recent deployments of ships like MSC Seaside and MSC Meraviglia. Later this year, MSC will move into its new $100 million North American headquarters in downtown Miami. The 130,000-square-foot space will bring together more than 400 team members from MSC Cruises, MSC Cargo and luxury offshoot Explora Journeys at one location.
Under Ms. Torrent’s leadership, the US market is becoming a critical growth engine for the Geneva-based cruise line. By 2026, MSC plans to operate from five home ports in North America, with MSC World America, its first ship designed specifically for the US market, now homeported in Miami. Ms. Torrent sees Miami not just as a gateway to the Caribbean but as a proving ground for the future of cruising where scale, sustainability and elevated guest experiences converge.
