Miami election settles inspector general, not park gym

After an Aug. 20 special election in which city voters approved referendums to keep gym equipment in Maurice A. Ferré Park, eliminate the independent auditor general and replace it with a new inspector general’s office with broader powers regarding government oversight, the future for the gym equipment remains unclear while the inspector general’s path is clearer.
Around 33,000 Miami city residents cast their votes, with more than 60% supporting a pair of referendums to establish an Independent Inspector General’s Office to investigate alleged government misconduct. Nearly 80% voted in favor of keeping already installed gym equipment at Maurice A. Ferré, however, a looming legal battle casts doubt on whether it will still stand.
