New Central Park in Doral set to open
Inauguration plans are set for the east portion of the Doral Central Park, according to city officials.
As part of the $150 million Doral Parks General Obligation Bond, the flagship project at 3000 NW 87th Ave. will be opening its first half on Aug. 24 with a community event. The project’s opening includes the amphitheater, skate park, playgrounds, multipurpose fields, a boardwalk, fishing pier and kayak launch, pavilions, and outdoor fitness equipment.
“In 2022, we inherited a park that was less than 10% complete,” Mayor Christi Fraga, told residents on social media when announcing the inauguration. “Today, over 80% of Doral Central Park is ready and we’re thrilled to return it to the community.”
“Over the last 18 months I have worked tirelessly against all odds and through many obstacles so that our residents can once again enjoy our Doral Central Park,” she continued. “Soon, our families will enjoy 82 acres of new amenities, activities, sports, an aquatic center, an amphitheater, and much more. With your support, nothing can stop our progress.”
The second half of the park is scheduled to be completed by the end of December with a projected opening to the community in January 2025. This will include the community center, aquatic facility, outdoor basketball and tennis courts and additional parking. Around this time last year, Doral city officials and administrators celebrated the topping out ceremony of the 82-acre park.
Developed by Kaufman Lynn Construction and architectural firm Bermello Ajamil & Partners, the 70,000-square-foot indoor recreation center will include a double gymnasium with bleacher seating, an elevated indoor running track, a child watch room, a large indoor fitness center overlooking the lake, learning kitchen and multi-purpose exercise rooms.
“After over three years of little to no progress in Doral Central Park and after overcoming many obstacles left by a bad administration,” Mayor Fraga said, “we now have a park.”
