County cools off planned rules for work in extreme heat

An ordinance to allow Miami-Dade to set its own rules for laborers working in extreme heat was withdrawn from Tuesday’s county commission agenda without comment. A state bill that passed both houses in Tallahassee this month may be the sticking point.

It was to be the second reading of an ordinance proposed by Commissioners Marleine Bastien and Kionne McGhee last year to create “a heat standard for outdoor workers … requiring certain employers to have an approved mandatory heat exposure safety program,” including, among other rules, “access to drinking water” and “shaded recovery periods.”
