Four major Miami International Airport upgrades on runway
Miami International Airport’s array of multi-billion-dollar upgrades is taking off, with four major projects ready to go aloft next year, Aviation Director Ralph Cutié told the county’s Airport and Economic Development Committee last week.
“We will be advertising our $754 million South Terminal expansion in January” in a design-build package, he said. “We will be advertising our $863 million Central Terminal redevelopment for a redesign in a couple of months.”
“We will be finalizing the preliminary designs for [gate] D-60, which I know is sensitive to everybody here, hopefully some time early to mid next year,” he said. The gate, at the tip of the North Terminal, handles both international and domestic flights. Public comments about difficulties for passengers in reaching that gate are common. The airport’s long-term program calls for redevelopment of the gate to accommodate large regional jets and narrow-body planes.
Finally, asked by Chairman Keon Hardemon when shovels will hit the ground, Mr. Cutié said he plans to begin work next year on a new park-and-ride project.
The committee had that day pushed that project forward by approving a $45 million purchase of land east of the airport now shared by Budget Rent-A-Car and Park ’N Fly Service LLC. The county commission will vote next on the deal.
That purchase is to bring the airport nearly 200,000 square feet of offices and warehouses on just over a half million square feet of land. A memo from Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said Miami International “needs this property to accommodate the airport’s terminal support facility needs as part of its future plans for growth.”
Budget is to retain its lease of 172,000 square feet until May 31, 2024. The county will have license and management agreements with occupant Park ’N Fly Service on behalf of the county for five years with two one-year renewal options on the remaining 329,000 square feet.

Excitement is in the air. Any improvement is an added value to this beautiful airport. I spent 45 years of my life working for an amazing Euro airline and retired 9 years ago. MIA will always be my second home. Thanks Mr. Cutie and staff, we are proud.

how about you folks try somethings a bit easier like making the moving walks work at least 50% of the times. Or better yet the train that is broke for a month now without any update on how long it will take to fix it.

Eastbound take off fly too low over the buildings in Edgewater. Airplaness need to gain a much higher altitude before approaching the city. This is too lowd and dangerous.Sometimes they do, but most of the times they are flying between the buildings. It’s too loud and dangerous..
