Nick Korniloff: Preparing for 30th anniversary Art Miami presentation

Nick Korniloff’s love of art came honestly. Born into a family boasting several artists and singers, the executive vice president and director of Art Miami grew up visiting art museums, learning about its forms and nurturing an affinity that would later inform his life’s work.

After graduating in hospitality management and tourism, he began working at the Miami Beach Convention Center. He had plans to open a restaurant. Coincidence or kismet had other plans.

“The first day [on] the job, they handed me a walkie talkie and said, ‘Go down Exhibit Hall D and introduce yourself to the people of Art Miami,’” he said. “So, in the early ’90s, on the very first day, I worked on Art Miami.”

He later became a facility manager, overseeing more than 300 annual events at the center for roughly four years, after which he worked at the Homestead-Miami Speedway to bring the first NASCAR Winston Cup event there, among other efforts.

In 2001, he was hired as director of operations of London-based Daily Mail Group’s Palm Beach contemporary and fine art fairs, a role that for six years took him across the globe to events like Art Basel in Switzerland and Paris’ FIAC International Contemporary Art Fair.

He came full circle in 2008, when he took over as director of Art Miami. He bought the fair a year later with two partners with whom he’s since added several other shows, including CONTEXT Art Miami, Art Wynwood, Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary, Aqua Art Miami and Art New York.

This year, for Art Miami’s 30th anniversary in December, he said, attendees can expect something special.

“We’re talking with a handful of very important artists about collaborating with us to celebrate, but we never could have done it without the loyal local collector base that’s supported us from day one. We’re excited to continue doing what we do best, which is give collectors and art enthusiasts a wonderful opportunity to see some of the finest works from around the world.”

Mr. Korniloff sat down with Miami Today reporter Jesse Scheckner. The interview, recorded by Jahmoukie Dayle, can be found Friday at http://bit.ly/2UdTyGr
