12 Parking Builders Vie At Ballpark

Twelve contractors have jumped into the Marlins stadium development game, all vying to build parking for the ballpark now under construction at the old Miami Orange Bowl site.

After about 100 contractor representatives packed City Hall for a mandatory meeting last month, 12 construction firms submitted formal bids to build the $94 million, 6,000-space project, conceived as four mixed-use, multi-level garages and six surface lots.

Bidders include: Des Moines, IA-based WeitzCompany; Boston-based Suffolk Construction; Birmingham, AL-based Brasfield & Gorrie; Scottsdale, AZ-based Hunt Construction teamed with Fort Lauderdale-based Moss Construction; Miami-based KM/Plaza; Dallas, TX-based Balfour Beatty Construction teamed with Fort Lauderdale-based James A. Cummings Inc.; Miami-based Coastal Construction; New York-based Turner teamed with Miami-based MCM; Parsippany, NJ-based Skanska; Dallas, TX-based Austin Industries; Fort Lauderdale-based Facchina Construction of Florida; and Miami-based JCON Group teamed with Hollywood-based John Moriarty and Associates of Florida.

The parking project contract is to be a "manager-at-risk," meaning the selected builder agrees to a fixed price and handles any overruns — a way that seeks to ensure it’s built within the city’s budget.

The city is to evaluate contractors’ bids in two separate parts, technical and financial, before awarding a contract.

Miami officials could not comment on the bids or the bidding process — including a timeline to announce a selection — because of a "cone of silence" law barring communication on ongoing solicitations.

Bidding, originally set to close Aug. 3, ended Monday after two extensions. Advertisement
