TRAINING FOR SOCCER: It took two special Tri-Rail trains to carry home soccer fans Saturday night after the first game at the new Nu Stadium in Miami Freedom Park. The rail line had a special four-car train waiting to roll, and within 20 minutes of the game’s 10 p.m. finish it headed out with its full capacity of 533 passengers. A four-car backup train had been readied, however, and handled 520 more passengers when it left at 11 p.m. “As this was our first time providing this service, we didn’t know how many riders to expect,” said the rail line’s interim executive director Diane Hernandez Del Calvo, “but we were well prepared and very pleased to provide them with a smooth and reliable experience.”

TROLLEY MASTER PLAN: Miami is working on a new master plan for its trolley service, which from October through December carried 1.1 million riders over 13 routes covering 112 total miles for up to 16 hours a day, depending on the route. The city is now at the community outreach portion of the plan, with city staff members riding trolleys to take input from passengers, and an outside trolley consultant doing the same thing, Charles Alfaro, the city’s assistant director of resilience and public works, told the Citizens’ Independent Transportation Trust. “Next up, we’re starting to organize community meetings to also get input in all five [city commission] districts,” he said. The aim is to develop trolley service standards and performance measures. The city will meet with the county’s Department of Planning and Public Works before the plan is final.

GAS UP 47% IN MONTH: Florida gas prices topped $4 a gallon for the first time in four years, with the state average rising 28 cents a gallon last week to reach $4.23 and average prices in Miami rising 23.5 cents to $4.19. “The average Florida driver now pays about $20 more to fill up than a month ago,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA. Florida prices have jumped as much as $1.35 a gallon over the past month, a 47% increase in a month. The national average price rose 11.8 cents per gallon in the past week to $4.06, up 65.1 cents per gallon from a month ago.

SCOOTER AGE MINIMUM: A new Sunny Isles Beach ordinance restricts motorized scooter use to riders 16 and older, and they must carry a government-issued ID when using the scooter. The fine for a violation is $250 the first time, and $500 for all subsequent infractions. The 22,200-resident city said it had surveyed nearly 1,900 residents on the issue and held two public events to gather feedback. The ordinance is in effect now, with citations to be issued starting June 1.
