Heather Moehling: Leads farm bureau while advocating for agricultural issues

In October 2024, Heather Moehling was named president of the Dade County Farm Bureau, where she has been involved in advocating for agricultural issues and promoting local agriculture.

Ms. Moehling started her journey with the bureau as a board member, later became secretary, moved up to vice president, and is now the president. Throughout her tenure at the Farm Bureau, she said, her focus has been on educating and bringing forth the next generations of farmers and professionals in the agriculture industry.

After serving on various boards like the South Dade Chamber of Commerce and Florida’s Florida Agritourism Associations, Ms. Moehling said serving the community, especially in agriculture, has been her calling since she was 15 years old, working in farming in her home state of Kentucky.

“Agriculture is something that just always has been in my soul,” she told Miami Today.

Established in 1942, the Dade County Farm Bureau is the oldest general county farm bureau in the state of Florida.

A not-for-profit membership-based organization affiliated with the Florida Farm Bureau Federation, the bureau carries a rich tradition in being the voice of agriculture in Miami-Dade County, Ms. Moehling said. The local agriculture production is a multi-billion-dollar business that is an important and vital economic driver, both locally and in the state.

“We are considered the ‘winter bread basket’ of the country, and our mission is to bring farmers together to solve issues collectively,” she said.

With bureau programs like the Future Farmers of America Program and the Young Farmers and Ranchers Leadership Group, Ms. Moehling said she is helping bring much-needed awareness of agriculture’s career paths, industry needs, and economic impact.

“We really want to showcase what jobs and careers you can do, especially in the younger ages,” she added. “This was something that I really wanted to do, and I think we’ve done a really good job of it.”

Ms. Moehling spoke with Miami Today reporter Abraham Galvan.
