FYI Miami: November 27, 2025
SILVER BLUFF TRAFFIC ACCORD: The City of Miami will handle more traffic engineering to control cut-through traffic in the Silver Bluff area under an agreement that county commissioners approved unanimously last week. The accord will let the city install traffic-calming devices using pre-approved designs without having to get specific county approval each time. The neighborhood’s added cut-through traffic has triggered congestion, accidents and safety concerns, says a memo accompanying the county legislation, which ended a long-running dispute. The city is to pay all costs to install and maintain the traffic-calming measures. Silver Bluff is between Southwest 27th and 12th avenues, bordered by U.S. 1 to the south and Coral Way to the north. The neighborhood encompasses just over a half square mile and is mostly single-family homes.
SCHOOL BOARD LEADERS: Mari Tere Rojas has been elected to chair the Miami-Dade County School Board for the fourth time and Monica Colucci has been elected vice chair for the third time. Ms. Rojas, who has been an educator for more than 45 years in the school district, was first elected to the school board in 2016. Ms. Colucci, who has been an educator for 26 years, was first elected in 2022.
STARS WITH STRIPES: Sumatran tigers may be some of the smallest tigers on the globe, but they are a big beneficiary of a new tiger habitat coming to Zoo Miami after a $2 million gift to the Zoo Miami Foundation. Sumatran tigers in the new Cecil and Ana Milton Family Foundation Stripes of Sumatra habitat at the zoo will be among fewer than 400 in captivity. County commissioners are to vote Dec. 2 to name the habitat, which will require a three-fifths vote to name a county facility for living persons. Preservation of the Sumatran tigers seems critical: tigers on the other Indonesian islands of Bali and Java went extinct in the twentieth century.
BONUS PARKING: Those who park in on-street spaces managed by the Miami Parking Authority will soon get an extra hour free beyond their expired time to get customers to shop, dine and visit in city locations. The hour of free extended parking will run from Nov. 28 through Jan 1. After parkers pay by either the PayByPhone or ParkMobile app, they’ll get a special holiday courtesy citation flyer with the added hour of parking.
GAS PRICE JUMPS: Average gas prices in Miami rose 16.6 cents per gallon in the past week to $3.12, according to GasBuddy. Prices in Miami are 17.2 cents higher than a month ago and 2.6 cents higher than a year ago. The national average price was unchanged last week at $3.03.
