Miami Beach Convention Center sets events record

The Miami Beach Convention Center has closed out its record-breaking fiscal year of 2024 and prepares to welcome more events for fiscal 2025 with 64 definite events already booked.

In the center’s fiscal year from October 2023 through September, said General Manager Freddie Peterson, “we did north of almost 100 events in total throughout the year, which is a record number for us. That includes 30 recurring annual events” and over 60 other major events.

Miami itself as well as Miami Beach, said Mr. Peterson, continues to transform itself into “a global hub for emerging tech and fin tech industries. As we all know, this is such a huge gateway to the Americas.”

Adobe MAX took place in October and brought over $22 million of economic impact, he said. The event is usually held at the Los Angeles Convention Center but “it travels every now and again, and we actually signed a contract in early January, February, and in less than eight months … we executed a global event,” which took over the convention center as well the adjacent Miami Beach Botanical Garden.

The city-owned 1.4-million-square-foot center welcomes shows in eight categories, said Mr. Peterson: medical and health, finance, IT and technology, education, sports, art and culture, special events, and corporate.

Fiscal year 2025, said Mr. Peterson, is “yet another year that’s going to be filled with the impactful lineup of conferences, trade shows, meetings and expos that will continue to really position the center, the destination … as a top tier venue for national and really international events that will continue to pull in high-quality events.”

Numbers for the upcoming year are showcasing a positive outlook for the convention center.

“So far this year, already,” he said, “we have at least 64 definite, already booked [events] into fiscal year 2025, which is ahead of what we did in fiscal year 2024, so the pace of booking continues to really increase year over year and earlier on. It really helps us in so many different ways.”

The convention center, he said, is to welcome new events such as iConnections, a premier conference focused on global investment. The event “brings leaders in finance and business together from around the globe. That’ll have over 3,000 attendees” and will take place from Jan. 26-31.

Another new event, the Business Show, is focused on entrepreneurship, providing insights and networking opportunities for business leaders, he said. It is to welcome more than 5,000 attendees from May 9-10.

“Another great piece of business for us [is the] National Minority Supplier Development Council annual meeting,” said Mr. Peterson. It is “another key event that really promotes diversity and inclusion in business by connecting minority suppliers with major corporations. Very proud to be hosting that event over a three-day period that’s north of 6,000 attendees.”

Mr. Peterson said the convention center is beginning to see good pickup in what is called the low-season months like August. An example is the Fraternal Order of the Police. The 67th National Conference and Expo will bring 13,000 persons during August, “where it tends to be – in the industry itself – a little bit quieter because it is obviously the summer season.”

Additionally, in August, Connect Marketplace will welcome “thousands of meetings and event professionals from around the globe” from Aug. 25-27, “where there’ll be buyers, suppliers and vendors. It’ll be about 2,500 people that’ll be coming to us.”

Big events are also expected to take over the convention center such as Art Basel from Dec. 4-8. A forecasted 77,000 persons are to attend the well-known art fair.

MAGIC Miami, a trade show featuring the latest trends in women’s fashion, will come to the center from Jan. 6-7 with a forecasted 5,000 people.

Florida Supercon will welcome a forecasted 30,000 people from July 18-20 as the event brings to life cartoons, anime, cosplay, fantasy and more.

U upgrades to the convention center are being made in order to continue to drive business.

“The city continues to reinvest into the building,” said Mr. Peterson, “I think that’s really important to say. When you talk about investing into capital, when you’re investing into the operating side, you’re investing into the people, etc. On the capital side, when you look at the current and future state of convention centers, investing into the digital platform, the LED digital video walls, etc., the city is investing into that.”

“You’re starting to see in a lot of these centers, first and second tier centers,” he said, “major investments into those LED video walls, really important to us, really, more importantly to our customers, seeing a big investment in that, more investing into the Wi-Fi upgrades, cabling, connectivity upgrades.”

State of the art upgrades coupled with sustainability facility upgrades “that we’re looking at,” said Mr. Peterson, “I think that perfectly positions us on the competitive front to continue to drive business into the building, put people to work, but even more importantly, really deliver an economic impact, which is incredibly important to the destination.”
