RUNWAY WORK DUE TO LAND: A deteriorating runway at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport is due to be replaced at a cost of more than $30 million, according to county legislation that seeks to award the replacement contract. “The pavement distress consists of alligator cracking, block cracking, joint reflection cracking, longitudinal and transverse cracking, patching, raveling, swelling, and weathering, all of which are signs of pavement deterioration,” county legislation says. Inspection, the legislation says, shows that the runway and taxiways “represent a poor to fair overall network condition,” according to a state review. OHLA USA is in line to do the job, including installing a new Precision Approach Path Indicator, which is a system of lights on the side of the runway that provides high precision visual guidance during a plan’s final approach to the airport. The work is to take 450 days.
AEROSPACE HUB GRANT: The Beacon Council, Miami-Dade County’s economic development organization, is to receive $125,000 to create plans, presentations and analyses to promote and plan for continued development and implementation of a future Miami-Dade Aerospace Technology Hub from the Defense Reinvestment Grants Program, which supports community-based activities that protect existing military installations, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Monday.

LIGHT UP IN RED: Miami-Dade would illuminate county buildings with red lights from Oct. 23 to 31 to observe Red Ribbon Week, the nation’s oldest and largest drug-prevention program, under a resolution that unanimously passed without discussion in the county’s Community Health Committee this week. The measure by Sen. René García asks Mayor Danielle Levine Cava to develop an illumination plan targeting which buildings will be included and report to commissioners within 90 days. It requires a full commission vote to be enacted. The resolution says “drug overdoses make up 11 deaths for every 100,000 residents” in the county and are the leading cause of injury-related deaths in the nation.

AIRPORT ACCESSIBILITY: Miami International Airport has been accredited by the Airports Council International Accessibility Enhancement Accreditation program. MIA is the second accredited US airport. MIA’s MyMIAccess program’s accessibility services include the MIAair tour program, which allows passengers with disabilities to practice travel in a safe and controlled environment; accessibility lanes in Customs.
