Coral Gables recycles via reverse vending machine

In just one month since its installation, Coral Gables residents recycled more than 1,500 containers through the Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) Rewards Incentive Program.

In November, city staff launched the new rewards incentive through the Keep Coral Gables Beautiful program at the War Memorial Youth Center at 405 University Dr., which quickly became popular, with almost 80% of participants becoming repeated recyclers.

“It’s great to see our community actively engaged in recycling,” said Coral Gables Mayor Vince Lago. “In addition to the recycling benefits, the youth center is reaping another benefit from the program: plastic bottles are no longer left behind, providing for a cleaner, more inviting playground.”

Once the first contest cycle closes Jan. 16, the top 10 recyclers will receive free movie tickets and popcorn from the Coral Gables Arts Cinema. Local businesses can also participate by providing incentives to recyclers. The program was sponsored by a Florida Beverage Association community grant in partnership with the American Beverage Foundation for a Healthy America.

Currently, the city is looking for other businesses to participate in the second contest cycle that would run from Jan. 16 to March 16. Interested business owners can email kcgb@coralgables.com for details on how they can become a retail partner and reward customers through the incentive program.

“It is especially gratifying to stop by the youth center,” Mayor Lago added, “and see so many children engaged in recycling. I encourage others to participate.”
