Carmen Concepción: New School of Education dean of Miami-Dade College

Carmen Concepción started her career as an educator over 30 years ago as a student at Miami Dade College School of Education. In September, she was named dean of the school. She now oversees the school and its three departments: Early Childhood Education, K-12 Teacher Education Programs, and the Center for Professional Development.

As she assumes a leadership position, she told Miami Today that her vision for the school is to “continue to elevate a program that has been one of the best in the state of Florida.” Her aim is to “create a model for the state and the nation so that we can meet the needs of every student regardless of their age, socio-economic status, and that we graduate the best teachers that we can as an institution.”

Over the span of her career, Dr. Concepción joined Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) and taught subjects including social studies and English as a second language. She also held positions such as curriculum support specialist, reading specialist, professional development specialist, instructional supervisor and executive director.

Dr. Concepción is a National Board-Certified Teacher and holds a doctorate in education from the College of William and Mary in educational policy, milestones she wanted to achieve since the early years of her career. “That was a lifetime goal,” she said, “to be able to reach the highest level in my profession, the National Board Certification, and also to be able to have a doctoral degree to lead this profession.” Prior to joining Miami Dade College, Dr. Concepción was the staff development director for Florida Virtual School.

Dr. Concepción spoke with Miami Today reporter Gabriela Henriquez Stoikow.
