Doral adding new trolley corridor to new UHealth center

Doral residents and commuters will soon have access to a new trolley corridor and a state-of-the-art UHealth center.

Miami-Dade County and the City of Doral are partnering to widen Northwest 84th Avenue from Northwest 58th to 74th streets in Doral.

The route expansion design would accommodate new bus-only lanes that will be used by Doral’s trolley and other buses. The plan is to expand the road from two lanes to four, with the two additional lanes serving as the bus-only lanes.

The project’s scope includes new drainage, signage, marking, and street lighting and represents a total investment of $7.7 million.

“By working with strong cities like Doral and anchor institutions like the University of Miami,” Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said, “we’ll be able to expand existing service and connect more riders to more of Miami-Dade County.”

Doral is designing a trolley route that would allow mobility between City Hall in Downtown Doral and the DTPW’s Palmetto Station on Northwest 74th Street.

Codina Partners, the developers of Downtown Doral, are also investing in the project with the donation of two trolleys.

“The City of Doral will soon be connected to mass transit and world-class healthcare, placing it on an entirely new level,” said Armando Codina, executive chairman of Codina Partners. “Within five minutes you can be at a train station that can take you into downtown Miami or connect you to lines that can take you up the Florida Coast to Palm Beach and beyond, making Doral the most central and connected city within Miami-Dade County boasting some of the finest healthcare in the nation, a model for all municipalities to follow.”

Projected to be completed in late 2024, the 150,000-square-foot UHealth at Doral medical center at 8375 NW 53rd Terrace is to have a dedicated trolley lane to transport future employees and patients alike to and from the facility.

Creating several hundred new jobs, the state-of-the-art medical center will allow Doral to advance as a western hub for UHealth’s world-class healthcare while connecting more residents and visitors to the community’s amenities than ever before, said Dr. Julio Frenk, UM’s president.

At six stories, UHealth at Doral is to have 33 exam rooms, eight operating rooms and three endoscopy suites. The medical center will also bolster 11 medical specialties, including cancer care from Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, advanced vision care from Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, neurology care and urological care from the Desai Sethi Urology Institute.

A host of other specialties are to be offered, like cardiology, gastroenterology and hepatology, internal medicine orthopedics, gynecology and imaging.

“This new facility will allow UHealth to bring preeminent care to the rapidly growing Doral community of more than 81,000 residents and will serve as a western hub for our expanding network of ambulatory services,” said Dr. Frenk. “This new facility builds upon the longstanding partnerships that the university has in the South Florida community.”
