Ashley Gantt: New legislator studies issues she will face in Florida House

The recently elected representative for the State House District 109, Ashley V. Gantt, started her professional career as a teacher with nonprofit Teach for America Mississippi Delta Corps. She devoted two years to the nonprofit before returning to South Florida to teach in Miami-Dade County Public Schools for seven years before beginning law school.

In 2013 she decided to pursue her lifelong dream to become a lawyer and started law school while she continued teaching.

After being admitted to the Florida Bar, she became a Broward County assistant public defender, serving the citizens of the area for over two years. She then joined the private sector until she decided to launch her own law firm in 2021, Gantt Legacy Law P.A.

Ms. Gantt decided to run for office because she wanted a change in the decisions being made at the state level for the community. As a result, she ran and won with 52% of the votes.

She said she is now focused on helping other Democratic candidates get elected to office and preparing to put forward the best legislation of her campaign proposals.

Ms. Gantt spoke with Miami Today reporter Gabriela Henriquez Stoikow on Aug. 29.
