Florida Grand Opera shares home with aviation company
Florida Grand Opera’s search for a new headquarters has been temporary stalled due to the coronavirus pandemic shutdown.
The opera sold its 35,000-square-foot Doral Center building at 8390 NW 25th St. for $7 million back in October 2019, according to Cushman & Wakefield real estate services, which represented the opera company in the sale. The opera is currently sharing the space with new owners Imagik International Corp., an in-flight entertainment systems company.
“There isn’t a lot of facilities out there that can cater to all of our needs. As of right now, we are on hold,” said Susan T. Danis, Florida Grand Opera’s CEO and general director. “The folks who bought the building are more than happy to have us here. Who thought an aviation company and an opera can coexist in one space?”
Before the quarantine, Ms. Danis said, Florida Grand Opera was looking at two potential facilities that are still available in Miami-Dade County, a transition process that can take six months to a year to finalize.
In 2013 Miami Today reported on the opera selling its downtown Miami property, once slated to be its headquarters, and deciding to remain at the Doral location, which at the time was suitable for its needs.
“We are evaluating and working with our architect to see how we can make these buildings functional for us,” Ms. Danis said.
Complying with statewide regulations for safety and health, Florida Grand Opera’s season is still scheduled to launch Nov. 14 at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts with “La Traviata,” the story of a glamorous Italian woman who falls in love with a humble, kindhearted man. A two-week intensive summer program called “Live Opera Lab” will also be offered in four separate sessions beginning June 22 for high school and college students pursuing a career in the performing arts.
“The season will go ahead one way or another, “Ms. Danis said. “We just want to be as transparent as we can.”
