PORT SMASHES RECORDS: PortMiami broke records in cargo and cruise passengers last year, it reported Tuesday. In the 12 months ended Sept. 30, the port gained 3.4% in cargo with 1.12 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEU) and 22% in cruise passengers, setting the world record with 6,824,000 passengers. It was the fifth consecutive year surpassing 1 million TEU as more than $1 billion infrastructure improvements enabled the port to handle larger vessels. Cruise business grew with Royal Caribbean International’s new Cruise Terminal A plus new large ships from Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Viking Ocean Cruises and MSC Cruises.

TRANSIT USE DIPS: Ridership on Miami-Dade County’s mass transit system fell 1.7% in October, the most recent month available, figures released last week show. October ridership has now fallen 20.9% over the past four years. Metrobus riders fell 1.1% to 4,554,886 in the year, and 25.6% from more than 6 million riders in October 2015. Metrorail riders fell 6.5% from October 2018 and 14.9% total since October 2015 to now total 1,757,225. Ridership on the free Metromover system downtown rose 5.1% in October from October 2018 to 831,234, but over the past four Octobers combined Metromover use has still fallen 7.6%.

FROM DISARRAY, ANOTHER TRY: The city commission has called for a special meeting at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 17, to take up various items, including a discussion on the employment status of the city manager as well as the selection of the chair to several community redevelopment agencies. Las week, the City of Miami Commission meeting was adjourned before noon as commissioners argued over the order of the day, leaving more than 50 items unaddressed.

DDA HEAD UNCONFIRMED: One of those dozens of items the City of Miami Commission never voted on was approving the appointment of the Downtown Development Agency, John Elizabeth Alemán. Several members of the agency’s board spoke during the public comment period asking for the commission to approve her appointment. Back in December, the commission had continued her appointment to the following meeting, with several commissioners desiring to know more about the selection process.

MAYOR GOES TO PAMM: This year, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez will deliver his State of the City Address at the Pérez Art Museum Miami. Expect the mayor to go over the city’s efforts to become more resilient and to curtail the affordability crisis. The State of the City will commence at 10 a.m. Jan. 28 and is open to the public.
