After having played around the world with various ensembles in far-flung places like the Sydney Opera House, Russia, Carnegie Hall and Musikverein, Vienna, Daniel Andai has returned to the school that in a way was his start in music. As new dean of music at the New World School of the Arts, Mr. Andai leads the department in which he used to be a high school student.

While many things have remained the same at the downtown Miami campus, from most of the faculty to walking among Miami Dade College students as a high schooler, many things are different. The acceleration of mobile technology has profoundly affected how music students access, record and learn about music around the world. Where before you’d get the opportunity to attend a live show once in a while, today all that music is available in an instant.

Channeling that accessibility – and keeping students from being too distracted during class – is just one thing Mr. Andai and his staff are working on. With 502 high school students and hundreds of college kids, school is back in session for Dean Andai.

Miami Today Reporter Nina Lincoff interviewed Mr. Andai at the New World School of the Arts.
