Train safety tests key to bringing Tri-Rail to downtown Miami

A modicum of progress has been made in Tri-Rail’s quest to bring trains into Miami Central, the downtown station used by Virgin Trains, but a lot still remains outside the control of the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority, Tri-Rail’s parent.
In June, the authority reached a milestone, as the Federal Railroad Administration approved a plan to test trains in regular service with positive train control (PTC) technology, the regional authority announced on its website. “This is a key milestone in moving closer to having PTC technology certified and implemented on the South Florida Rail Corridor,” the website said.
