Support lingers among leaders for a Miami River tunnel

Though plans for a long-discussed tunnel under the Miami River in Brickell seem to be shelved, there’s support for a tunnel among city leaders.

“The Brickell bridge has developed a dismal reputation for creating extreme congestion in one of Miami’s most dense and active areas,” said Francis Suarez, Miami mayor, via email. “When the bridge rises, it stifles connectivity and access, as well as affects the economic and environmental welfare of our city. I will continue to promote cooperation between the Downtown Development Authority, the Florida Department of Transportation, the Miami River Commission, and others as we work to find a viable, long-term solution to protect the quality of life for all who live, work, and visit this economic epicenter of our city.”
