Sudden homeless influx downtown spurs cleanups, policing

Dealing with a sudden influx of homeless people downtown, Miami and its Downtown Development Authority are concentrating more cleanup efforts and more police attention to areas where encampments are beginning to grow.
“This is the biggest thing on my plate,” said Antonio Reguiera, Miami Police commander for downtown. “The good thing is that downtown leads the city in having the lowest crime rate. But we understand the concern [about homelessness] as we see the weekly data. We try to assist as much as we can, by offering shelter or, in some cases, arrest. It’s our most important issue.”
