Smart plan could use funds to connect Miami Springs to Metrorail

Miami Springs Councilwoman Maria Mitchell asked members of the Transportation Planning Organization’s Transportation and Mobility Committee to consider using SMART Plan funds to build a bridge connecting her city to the Metrorail station in Okeechobee, which she said is visible but unreachable from across the Miami River. “The only way to get to it is to either swim across or head west into Medley, north into Hialeah [and back east],” she said. One other way exists, she said: by crossing alongside Florida East Coast Railway tracks that, at grade level, wouldn’t require elevated construction to cross the river. “It would just be a perfect project for the SMART Plan, to build a pedestrian-bicycle bridge connecting our community,” she said, adding that the proposed bridge would also connect Miami Springs with Medley and Virginia Gardens…To read the full story click here
