Short-term rental sites may still pay Miami-Dade tourist tax

A court ruling last week may have freed short-term vacation rental platforms like Airbnb and HomeAway from having to pay local tourism development taxes, but they’d do well to continue doing so, Miami-Dade Commissioner Sally Heyman says.
On March 25, the Fourth District Court of Appeals voted 2-1 to uphold a circuit judge’s ruling that the platforms, while facilitating vacation rentals, are not themselves “dealers” like hotels under state law and therefore need not collect and remit taxes.
