Planned steel mill gets land buy extension, doubled height OK’d

A company planning a $224 million micro steel mill to convert scrap metal into construction materials on 123 acres of former Homestead Air Reserve Base land now owned by Miami-Dade County has received a fourth time extension to prove it has the money to handle the project once it buys the land.
County commissioners also granted the mill’s developers the right to nearly double the height of the smokestack planned on the property to 135 feet. The previous approval was for 65 feet.
