Raymond Baker has been appointed director of the Miami-Dade Public Library system by Mayor Carlos Giménez.

Mr. Baker has served as interim director since Feb. 18 after previously serving as assistant director. He has a bachelor’s degree of science from Florida State University; a master’s in business administration from the University of Miami; and a master’s of arts in library and information science from the University of South Florida. Mr. Baker will replace outgoing director Gia Arbogast.

Mr. Baker on Thursday thanked the mayor at the county commission meeting along with Ms. Arbogast, department directors he’s worked with over the years and county commissioners, among others.

Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz said he’s known Mr. Baker over 15 years. “I don’t see anyone more deserving than you,” he said.

Commissioner Barbara Jordan praised Mr. Baker for “thinking outside the box” and said it’s wonderful when the county hires from within, noting how many county departments Mr. Baker has been a part of over the years.
