Miami commissioners aim to make fire and police chief appointments

Miami City Commissioners are planning to ask voters if they’ll approve amending the charter so that appointments of fire and police chiefs by the city manager will need a majority vote of approval by the five-member body.
According to legislation under consideration today (4/22), the city commission “has concerns regarding how the recent selection process for the [new] police chief was conducted” and, given that the two most important jobs in city government are police and fire chiefs, it is critically important “that the best and brightest persons are selected for these positions.”
