Miami commissioners absent, vote on marina redevelopment put off

Written by on August 28, 2017

Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado’s move to get a marina redevelopment project on the November ballot faltered Monday morning. He had called a special meeting of the city commission, but only Chairman Keon Hardemon and Commissioner Wifredo “Willy” Gort showed up. Commissioners Ken Russell, Frank Carollo and Francis Suarez were absent.

The mayor is hoping to get approval of a project to redevelop the marinas on city-owned land on Virginia Key, and any new lease of city-owned waterfront property must be approved by voters at referendum. The special meeting is needed in order to meet an early September deadline to get ballot proposals on the Nov. 7 general election ballot.

At the request of the mayor, Mr. Hardemon recessed the meeting until 9 a.m. Friday, with the mayor hoping the other commissioners will attend.
