In Jackson’s surge plans, staff must ask ‘What comes next?’

Executing surge plans at hospitals within the Jackson Health System is a calculated, fluid process that requires staff to keep asking, “What comes next?” said Peter Paige, Jackson Health System’s Chief Medical Officer.
According to Dr. Paige, Jackson’s leadership team receives reports on inpatient Covid cases multiple times per day, which allows them to continuously plan where these patients will be treated. Using informal analytics, he said, staff can make projections based on current numbers and decide whether to open more units for Covid positive patients or to convert Covid units back to their original purpose.
