County using $10 million Omni area rent to grow rapid transit

County commissioners have authorized a special election Nov. 2 to let Biscayne Gardens residents decide if they want to create their own municipality within the county. The area has almost 35,000 residents and 18,892 electors who would decide the future of the unincorporated area located within District 2, represented by Commissioner Jean Monestime, who sponsored the resolution.
Residents spoke almost an hour for and against the resolution Sept. 1 and commissioners ultimately adopted it 11-2. Most of the arguments included residents’ concerns over an increase in property taxes and the quality of services.
