County putting home rule concerns to legal test

To curtail state efforts to control county matters, Miami-Dade lawmakers have authorized their attorneys to defend the county’s right to self-govern.

“I move to… authorize the county attorney to pursue or defend any lawsuits the county attorney deems necessary to defend the county’s home rule authority,” said Commissioner Dennis Moss, who initiated the motion that received sweeping commission approval July 23. “Whatever the county deems necessary to defend home rule, they should be authorized to take those steps.”
