County commission broadens its clout in new schools OKs

Approval of all daycares, day nurseries and private schools in Miami-Dade will now fall under the jurisdiction of the county’s principal lawmaking body, as commissioners this month broadened their authority to hear, expand or modify school development applications.
Prior to the ordinance change, the county’s code provided the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners with powers to hear zoning applications for developments defined as “special exemptions” and “unusual uses,” as well as approval of private schools serving 500 or more students with over 100,000 square feet of building facilities.
