County altering municipal boundaries change rules

County commissioners on Tuesday passed an ordinance by a 10-2 margin that would change the rules to make municipal boundary changes and include factors such as contiguity to consider an annexation requested by a city.

The ordinance was subject to a heated debate in which residents from Doral and Sweetwater expressed their concerns over the legislation that would affect an ongoing request for annexation of a two-square-mile commercial area next to the Dolphin Mall made by both cities. Sweetwater filled the application back in September 2020 and Doral in December 2020.
