Bids issue tangled in seaweed removal contract

Talks over a contract award to clean up seaweed blooms expected to hit Miami-Dade shorelines this year led some lawmakers Tuesday to ask whether the county’s bid evaluation processes could aid favoritism. There was also a small matter about sea turtle conservation.
County commissioners ultimately OK’d the potential $14.15 million contract with Beach Raker LLC for seaweed removal and mechanical beach cleaning, even though the company bid wasn’t the lowest of four received.
