Beach mayor seeks high bar to build monorail

Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber, who has vocally opposed an unsolicited offer by Malaysian casino giant Genting to run a $400 million monorail between Miami Beach and downtown Miami, has submitted city legislation that could erect major barriers to the plan.
City commissioners were to vote this week on his legislation, which would set very high bars to any “mass transit fixed guideway project.” The ordinance would require that any such transit win five votes from the seven-member city commission.
