Beach gives manager clout to make sidewalk cafes toe the line

Miami Beach commissioners have unanimously approved allowing the city manager to terminate or suspend sidewalk café operations should businesses stray from 11 regulations and some amendments in the city’s code. The threat of termination or suspension is meant to cure corrupt behavior.
The legislation, approved last week on its second reading, allows the city manager to terminate or suspend sidewalk café operators straying from regulations in the city’s code. Business owners must abide by 11 rules outlined in the city’s handbook under public property and uses in public rights-of-way for sidewalk cafes. Three amendments provide more power to the city manager to close operations.
