Performance groups offer a rich playbill in Miami theaters

Miami-Dade’s favorite and most anticipated performing arts groups and musical performances are back on schedule at the biggest area stages.

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts at 1300 Biscayne Blvd. has a full schedule of South Florida’s most prominent performing arts groups.

The New World Symphony Fellows will get together Oct. 22 during “MTT + Rachmaninoff” for an evening of Rachmaninoff led by Michael Tilson Thomas. During this one-night-only performance, acclaimed pianist Yefim Bronfman will take the stage for Rachmaninoff’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 3.

New World Symphony will hit the stage again with The Cleveland Orchestra Nov. 4-5 for the “Mahler & Debussy” monumental piece. Rising pianist George Li will join Cleveland for Debussy’s Fantaisie.

Florida Grand Opera presents “El matrimonio secreto.” Set during Cuban diaspora in Miami Beach in the 1980s, this Florida Grand Opera version will be performed in a specially commissioned Spanish translation from the original Italian. Performances will be from Nov. 12-15.

Winner of eight 2019 Tony Awards including Best Musical and the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, “Hadestown” is an acclaimed new show by celebrated singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and innovative director Rachel Chavkin. This love story will be told from Dec 6-11.

The Miami City Ballet’s “George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker” returns to the Arsht Center from Dec. 16-24. The production will have a cast of over 100 dancers and children in lavish costumes, along with Tchaikovsky’s music played by a live orchestra.

Aventura Arts & Cultural Center at 3385 NE 188th St. is presenting the Miami International Piano Festival: Concerto Night Oct. 23, with Hobert Earle, the music director and principal conductor of the Odessa Philharmonic. Featured pianists include Francesco Libetta, Nikolay Khozyainov and Stephen Beus.

Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida will officially open its 25th Anniversary season Oct. 15, presenting a classical repertoire, including Issaev’s Shostakovich Suites, and Endless to Mahler’s Symphony 5 Adagio. The program will also include Nebrada’s Pentimento with music from J. S. Bach and classical Asaf Messerer’s Spring Waters.

The Miami International Piano Festival continues Nov. 20 with Russian concert pianist Vyacheslav Gryaznov. He is the author of more than 40 concert arrangements. He has gained a reputation as one of the most remarkable young arrangers working today.

The Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida continues its 25th Silver Anniversary Celebration of The Nutcracker Dec. 8 to Tchaikovsky’s popular score based on the tale of Ernst Hoffman. The critically acclaimed performance is choreographed and directed by renowned Ballet Master Vladimir Issaev.

South Miami Dade Cultural Arts Center at 10950 SW 211th St. in Cutler Bay is showcasing a few anticipated performances.

In celebration of Jamaica’s 60th anniversary of Independence, The Louise Bennett-Coverley Heritage Council will present “The National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica” Oct. 1 under the Patronage of Consul General Oliver Mair’s guidance.

Dimensions Dance Theatre of Miami brings the Cuban nostalgia back to the stage Nov. 12. Dimensions plans to fire up the main stage once again with Latin rhythms played live by Alain Garcia and his Latin Power band. Rounding out the bill is a new ballet by the choreographer in residence Yanis Pikieris to the compositions of “Gershwin,” pianist Ernesto Lecuona and the South Florida premiere of Jimmy Orrante’s entrancing “Balanced.”

On Nov. 18, Miami Lyric Opera presents the “Opera Gala” in its 20th anniversary featuring a group of international artists as well as local ones. The program includes duets and ensembles from the most celebrated opera composers.

The Seraphic Fire is scheduled to fill the room with musical peace and joy Dec. 16 during “A Seraphic Fire Christmas.” The audience will get a chance to enjoy familiar favorites such as Jesus Christ, The Apple Tree and Silent Night.
