When Jean Monestime taught in the Miami-Dade public schools, he learned from his students. He said that helps him bring to the Miami-Dade County Commission an understanding that every day, person and issue provides an opportunity to gain knowledge.
As chairman, Mr. Monestime has a number of goals, including closing the income inequality gap. To that end, he established the Chairman’s Council for Prosperity Initiatives that meets monthly to hear from experts, academics and citizens.
Mr. Monestime believes wage disparity and transportation are interrelated and said statistics show if most people in the county who drive right now would ride transit, each would save about $10,000 a year. Therefore, he said, the commission encourages people to ride public transit and also encourages employers to buy public transit passes at discount and give them to employees as an incentive to work at their companies.
Miami Today reporter Susan Danseyar interviewed Mr. Monestime at the commission’s downtown offices.
